Praise the Lord! What exactly is the Holy Spirit? Often in our Christian faith, we have to use analogies to help describe sacred mysteries. St. Basil the Great said, "The Holy Spirit is like the sunshine, which permeates all the atmosphere, spreading over land and sea, and yet is enjoyed by each person as though it were for him alone, so the Spirit pours forth his grace in full measure, sufficient for all, and yet is present as though exclusively to every one who can receive him." We have, of course, received the gift of the Holy Spirit through the grace of our confirmation, but that doesn't mean the fire of the Spirit in our lives in inextinguishable! Through prayer, sacraments, fellowship, and service we have to keep the Holy Spirit burning in our heart or we will become dead and lifeless. Lord, let this Pentecost weekend be a time when we receive the light and warmth of the Spirit into our hearts again. Help us to reconcile ourselves with you by seeking the forgiveness of our sins so that we may be alive once again. Amen. Now and Forever!
